Celebrate American Heart Month With Recommended Healthy Lifestyle Choices

As the number of Americans at risk for heart attacks and strokes continues to increase, PMH Medical Center encourages heart-healthy lifestyle choices during this American Heart Month and throughout the year.

According to the American Heart Association, the country’s aging population, increased life expectancy and lifestyle choices have contributed to an increase in people with high blood pressure, which is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease-related deaths. While cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of deaths in the world, improving health through lifestyle choices can decrease that likelihood.

PMH Medical Center, in line with American Heart Association standards, offers the following recommendations for a heart-healthy lifestyle:

            – Limit alcohol consumption. Men should limit their alcohol consumption to two or fewer drinks per day and women to one or fewer drinks per day. – Be active. Most people should participate in 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, as well as include muscle-strengthening activity twice per week. – Eat well. General guidelines include a diet of primarily fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, nuts, low-fat dairy products, skinless poultry and fish. Individuals should limit consumption of saturated and trans fats, sodium, red meat and sweets. – Manage stress. Time management, identifying stress triggers, relaxation and practicing gratitude are a few of the many ways individuals can manage stress. – Quit smoking. Smoking is a proven risk factor for certain cardiovascular diseases and is considered a preventable cause of premature death.     – Collaborate with your doctor. Review lifestyle choices and seek advice of a primary care provider at an annual checkup and throughout the year, as necessary.

 

Those lifestyle recommendations can affect an individual’s weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, all of which affect the likelihood of developing a cardiovascular disease.

To celebrate American Heart Month and educate and empower individuals to make heart-healthy lifestyle choices, PMH Medical Center is hosting its annual Go Red Health Fair on Thurs., Feb. 8 from 7:30-11 a.m. at PMH Medical Center, 723 Memorial St., Prosser. The event is free to attend for the public, and pre-registration is not required. Twelve-hour fasting is required for to complete the lipid panel/lab testing; all other tests (pulmonary function tests, bone density, BMI, etc.) do not require fasting.
