PMH Medical Center and Board-certified Surgical Podiatrist Jared Clifford, DPM, FACFAS, mark National Foot Health Awareness Month this April by offering foot health tips and a free foot health presentation to the community. For more than a decade, Dr. Clifford has been providing both surgical and non-surgical podiatric, foot and ankle services to patients at PMH.
“A healthy body starts with a good foundation – your feet,” Dr. Clifford said. “Feet work hard and can be a major contributor to overall wellbeing; yet, they can be easily overlooked and neglected. National Foot Health Awareness Month helps raise knowledge and understanding of their importance.”
Stay active and keep your feet pain-free with these tips:
– Clean and dry your feet, as excessive moisture is a breeding ground for fungus.
– Examine your feet weekly for irregularities, including ingrown toenails, toenail discoloration or peeling skin between the toes.
– Wear proper footwear. Shoes that are too tight or narrow can lead to long-term foot problems. High heels or pointy shoes can cause foot and ankle problems. These include calluses, ingrown toenails and Haglund’s deformity, amongst other issues. Visit a specialty shoe store, or talk to a podiatrist, about proper footwear.
– Use arch supports. Since feet are the body’s major shock absorbers, custom arch supports provide greater cushion for feet and can help prevent knee, hip, back and ankle pain or sprains.
“People, unfortunately, often self-treat or delay an appointment with a podiatrist for too long. If swelling, pain, redness or irregularities persist, see your doctor,” Dr. Clifford said. “Keeping you active and healthy is my main goal as a provider. Addressing seemingly minor foot problems upfront will help them from potentially turning into major foot health issues, which could sideline you from daily activities.”
Dr. Clifford offers a variety of services at PMH Surgical Group in Prosser for both adult and pediatric patients. Services at PMH include: arthroscopic ankle surgery; foot and ankle fractures; bunions and hammertoes; adult and pediatric flatfoot; ankle instability; ingrown toenail procedures; plantar wart excision; heel pain; custom-molded foot orthotics; and non-healing wounds of the foot and ankle.
To learn more about foot health, attend Dr. Clifford’s free foot health presentation from 12:30-1 p.m. on Wed., April 18 at the Prosser Community/Senior Center. All are welcome to attend. No RSVP necessary.
